Kona Update #2

Posted October 10, 2007 12:48 PM

Race day is growing closer. Kona is absolutely teeming with triathletes. The buzz of excitement is growing louder every day!

Athlete registration opened yesterday. Bob, Jan & Ken, Christiane, Tania & Steve (New Zealand friends) and Shell & Keith (American friends that we met last year while volunteering) are all registration volunteers this year. I'm sure they half expected me to be the first person in line for race package pickup and registration which opened at 9am, but I restrained myself and headed down mid-morning instead. It was quite surreal to go through the registration process as an athlete and receive my race numbers etc, while remembering volunteering last year in the same room. When I arrived Bob was waiting with some of the volunteers from last year and they gave me a round of applause while Bob took photos as I made my way from station to station going through the registration process. It was a very special experience.

Later yesterday afternoon was the Athlete's Parade down Ali'i Drive. Once again, it was incredible to be part of the parade after watching it in the past. There are 122 Canadians entered in the race out of approx 1850 participants.

After avidly reading articles and updates on ironman.com for the past 8 years, I was thrilled to receive a brief mention in an article posted there yesterday. http://ironman.com/events/ironman/worldchampionship/gaylia-osterlund-profiles-more-of-our-age-group-qualifiers

That's it until after the race...
