No Ironman this year...

2010 was to be the year for Ironman Coeur d'Alene. Jan Frith and I drove down to CDA, Idaho, last June to spectate and sign up for this year's race. My plan was to race on June 27th and then take a 2 - 3 year break from Ironman racing and focus on shorter distance races. Well my body had other plans for me this year starting with a month long bout of the swine flu which laid me low and curtailed training. After I recovered from the flu I had a couple of major back issues that kept flaring up when I swam or biked. Training was starting to get back on track when I made a foolish tri-rookie mistake, a couple of weeks ago, of not unclipping properly when coming to a stop. This resulted in a slow motion "mini-crash" onto my left side, bruising my hip, knee and elbow (plus my pride...) This was basically the wake-up call that I needed to finalize the decision to withdraw from the race. Ironman Coeur d'Alene was not for me this year. Bob and I will still be travelling to Idaho at the end of June to spectate and cheer Jan on during her race. So now it's time to recuperate fully and work on getting my fitness level back so that I can look forward to racing lots of fun olympic distance races next year.
