Tri-Star Bob's Kelowna Race
Posted August 22, 2005 08:09 PM
After more than a year the wait is finally over! Last August the Canadian National Team qualifier, in Kelowna, was cancelled on race morning due to a severe thunder and lightning storm, and flash flooding on the bike course. Luckily this year's race was also designated as the National team qualifier for the Olympic distance World Championships, for age-group triathletes. The championships will take place, in Honolulu, on October 8th. This year's race was a tough one - Bob's age group (M 50-54) had 41 participants from all across Canada taking part - a very competitive and strong field. There were 12 qualifying spots for the Worlds and Bob placed 14th with a personal best of 2:26:57 (the first time he's not placed 1st or 2nd at a race in years...!!) Luckily a qualifying spot "rolled down" to Bob and he eagerly accepted. We had hedged our bets after last year's race and booked to go to Hawaii from Oct 3 to 22 this year. So everything is in place for us to fly first to Honolulu for a week so that Bob can race there, and then we'll carry on to Kona-Kailua to spectate at Ironman Hawaii - the World Championships for the Ironman distance of triathlon on October 15th. The final week will be spent soaking up the rays and getting lots of R & R.
In the meantime, we are now in Penticton at the rental house. The weather has been very hot - race day in Kelowna was scorching - 37 degrees! Hopefully things will cool off a little before this weekend's race.
I'll post another update a little closer to race day.
